Quick bites … Ruthven’s at the Dean Gallery

17 Jan

Ruthven’s is something of an Edinburgh institution it dates back to 1983. Before the museum closed for refurbishment, their restaurant at the National Portrait Gallery was a favourite lunch places for me.

Now part of Heritage Portfolio, Ruthven’s continue to operate a “scratch” kitchen ( everything cooked from scratch), at various venues including the Gallery of Modern Art and the  Dean Gallery. (Non-art lovers can be easily bribed by the prospect of tea).

Used to queuing for refreshments at their cafés rather than waitress service, I found the wait for a cup of tea and cake a bit long this afternoon but most of the tables were full. That aside,  when the cake came, it was delicious – an apple cupcake with vanilla icing (the fetching pink topped cake in the picture). In true Ruthven’s style it was moist and delicious. And don’t you just love having proper leaf tea and a strainer?

It’s easy to forget these cafés with so many new ones popping up in Edinburgh, but if you want tea and cake at its best, look no further (and good savoury snacks too).
