Dress up or not for a night out?

15 Jul

I recently ate at Michelin restaurant in England and was astonished to see how casually dressed some of the diners were – (shorts and flip flops for example).

When I eat out at a restaurant, I love to dress up and make it an occasion.  I’d say in Edinburgh at least diners make an effort.  What would you do?

I used to dress up when going out to eat, back when I didn’t go out so often. Now, I go out once or twice most weeks but not always to very fancy places. If it’s an occasion, or I’m going somewhere really nice, I’ll pay some attention to what I wear. Most of the time, I’m happy to go as I am. Which is usually fairly tidy: my normal business wear is suitable for most situations.

Shocking that folk roll up in flip flops for fine dining places. Where’s their sense of occasion? Which one was it anyway? I guess food is becoming such a mainstream part of our culture, what with all the celebrity chef shows on tv and such, that people are getting more relaxed about it. I suppose that’s a good thing though. I once won a competition at work for a night at the Savoy. I made the effort but had to change out of the olive suede loafers I was wearing that day. I took them along in a Tesco carrier bag and to my shame managed to leave the bag there at the table. Never had the courage to retrieve them!

    So, in summary I’m undecided!

Great blog BTW, added to my subs list.
